“Syntropy” in Wine

There is a mysterious connection that forms around a wine brand—a community. We also feel that energy at local farmer’s markets and when we buy directly from producers online.  We can learn the story, the purpose, and the inspiration behind it. We can become more connected to the source of the energy and strengthen our relationship through that process.
By the time a wine gets to bottle, a mini-community has already formed around it that includes all of the purveyors who have helped get it to that moment. Producers of glass bottles, corks, wax, labels as well as those who've contributed their expertise in web design, label design, packaging, storage, and shipping... At the heart of it all is the vineyard, the farmer,  the grower!
This Pinot noir is a collaboration with Max Reichwage, a wine school friend of mine, whom I also lived with for 2 years while at UC-Davis.  We are both Big Ten alums (Illinois & Michigan) born and raised in the Midwest.
Max has been diligently restoring the Twin Hills property in Sebastopol, California, from a once thriving apple packing facility and heritage orchard to the newly thriving Reichwage Winery. He has managed to bring new vigor to both the heritage orchard and the Pinot noir vineyard.
It is a treat for me to visit Max throughout the growing season and see what progress he has made in developing this new project!  I feel lucky to be able to make wine from this amazing fruit.

CHAPTER ONE

Syntropy is the potential for new life, new meaning and new ways of being which emerge from the chaos and decay of entropy. Syntropy is a quantity complementary to entropy: The sum of these two quantities is constant for the system considered, and defines the transformation potential of the system. On this basis, the theory develops equations apt to describe any possible evolution of complex systems, particularly concerning biological/social systems.
Syntropy concentrates energy in ever smaller spaces increasing order and organization, but since the concentration of energy cannot increase indefinitely, at some point, the system releases energy and matter, thus activating the opposite process of entropy and an exchange of energy and matter with the environment.
Life needs syntropy and must therefore reduce entropy. The reduction of entropy is achieved through a continuous tension towards optimization, minimalism, attention to the signals coming from the heart and the resolution and prevention of conflicts.
Exchange between life and the environment results in a continuous process of construction and destruction which allows life to evolve. Exchange reveals the principle of complementarity which is a fundamental property of life at all its levels of organization, from the organic/biological level to economics.
